Although the Farnham area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, the first written record of Farnham is from Anglo-Saxon times, when it was named Fearnhamme. The first Cistercian Abbey in England, Waverley Abbey, was founded in 1128. Also built in Norman times was Farnham Castle - now a mixture of architectural styles and periods, containing both Grade I and II listed buildings. Both Waverley Abbey and Farnham Castle are open to the public.
